SEVEN KEYS TO

HOME DESIGN

1. DESIGN ORIGINS:
Choosing the site, selecting the designer, communicating ideas, visualizing design & determining budget

2. SITE AND SCALE:
How the home relates to its surroundings with respect to views, natural light, wind direction & privacy

3. LANGUAGE AND STYLE:
A vocabulary for communicating with designers (for example, "French Country," "light and airy," "contemporary," etc.)

4. OPENINGS AND LIGHT:
Doors, windows, natural & artificial light, materials for maintaining privacy & insulation, etc.

5. SPHERES OF LIVING:
Design based on daily functions and rituals such as eating and cooking, sleeping and privacy, working and playing & gathering and entertaining

6. FLOW OF SPACE:
The layout of rooms, how rooms and spatial uses relate and transition into one another via doors, hallways, walls and partitions & stairs

7. SUSTAINABILITY:
Air quality, ventilation, energy, conservation, and safe materials.

WHAT CAN A PROFESSIONAL

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING DESIGNERS DO FOR YOU?

Professional Residential Building Designers have the education, training, experience, and vision to maximize your construction dollar and ease the entire design and construction process.

You have a vision of what you want. Now you need to make that vision a reality.

Whether you're about to expand your home, adapt an existing home to a new use, or construct an entirely new home, your project represents a major investment.

Early involvement is key. By helping you define your project, we can provide meaningful guidance. We can conduct site studies, help secure planning and zoning approvals and perform a variety of other pre-design tasks.

Plus, when we are involved at the earliest planning stage, we gain more opportunities to understand your lifestyle, develop creative solutions and propose ways to maximize your budget.

We are specially educated to help you define what you want to build, present options you might never have considered and help you get the most for your valuable investment.

We don't just design four walls and a roof. We create total environments, both interiors and exteriors, that are functional and exciting places in which to live.

We are problem solvers. We help you get the most from your construction dollar. We can show you ways to reduce building costs, decrease your home's energy needs and increase its future resale value through good design.

Building is a long process that is often messy and disruptive, particularly if you're living in the space while it's under construction. We represent you, not the contractors. We look out for your interests and smooth the process, help find qualified construction contractors, and visit the worksite to help protect you against work that's not according to plan.

Aurora Award 2004

Grand Aurora Award Winner, Live Design Concept Award

The Second Annual Concept Awards "Live Challenge" took place on the trade show floor during the 2004 SEBC. Derived from a fictitious client and building site, designers, architects and builders developed site plans, floor plans and exterior elevations on the SEBC trade show floor.

Winners were judged on the best use of Whirlpool’s "Family Studio" and "Gladiator Garage Works," the artistic incorporation of Andersen "Impact Resistant Glass" windows, as well as how they handled the 12-hour competition.

The Southeast Building Conference is inviting the region’s top home designers to participate in the fourth annual "Concept Awards" live design competition hosted by the American Institute of Building Design. The contest is open to designers, architects and builders willing to take on the task of creatively providing solutions presented by a "design program" derived from a fictitious client and building site. In addition, each home will be judged on the best use of Whirlpool’s "Family Studio" and "Gladiator Garage Works" and the artistic incorporation of Andersen "Impact Resistant Glass" windows.

The competition will take place at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando during SEBC show hours on August 3-5. The competition runs over two days and the winners will be announced at the Aurora Awards dinner on the evening of August 5.

Aurora Awards 2006

The Concept Award competition at the 2005 SEBC in Orlando was another success. Located in the “Hurricane Alley” portion of the exhibit hall, the five contestants worked hard on a Craftsman style solution to a fictitious client design problem. The competition started at 10 am on Thursday morning as booths were being set up all around them until the hall closed at 7pm. It continued on Friday from 7am till the hall closing at 6pm on Friday. Saturday morning the entries were judged at the Rosen Centre Hotel while copies were on exhibit at the competition area in the Orange County Convention Center. The judge’s selections were announced at the Aurora Awards gala banquet also held at the Rosen Centre Hotel ballroom on Saturday night. The Honor award of Merit went to Bobby Morales, CPBD of Morales-Keesee Design Associates, Apopka FL, the Honor Award went to Allen Beaumont, CPBD of Beaumont & Associates, Altamonte Springs FL.

The winner of the 2005 Concept Award Grand Aurora was Susan Berry, ASID of Classical Home Design, Inc., Maitland FL. Susan is the first to win back-to-back competitions as well as the first to win a Grand Aurora for this event. Congratulations to all.

The 2005 competition judges were from varied disciplines. 2003 Concept Award winner Frederick Spencer of Spencer Design Group - Orlando handled the architectural viewpoint. Ben Wojcikiewicz of Whirlpool Corporation, a sponsor of the event, handled the use of Whirlpool product line within the design entries. Lyle Breeze, National President of the American Institute of Building Design, another sponsor, was there to give input as a residential designer. Kathryn Dunagan, director of Interior Architecture for Marc-Michaels Interior Design – Orlando, reviewed the entries as well. Marla Ottenstein of Ottenstein Marketing – Naples, handled the salability aspects of the designs.
